- ABSTRACT
- Studied tendencies to reduce ambiguity in normal Ss and inpatients with various mental disorders and assessed factors influencing these tendencies. Human Ss: 30 normal male and female German adults (mean age 34 yrs). 30 male and female German adults (mean age 33 yrs) (neuroses). 30 male and female German adults (mean age 29 yrs) (borderline disorders). 25 male and female German adults (mean age 27 yrs) (acute schizophrenia). 25 male and female German adults (mean age 44 yrs) (chronic schizophrenia). Ss' responses to the Holtzman Inkblot Technique (W. H. Holtzman et al, 1961) were analyzed with S. Ertel's (1972) Dogmatism Dictionary to determine their tendencies to avoid or reduce ambiguity. Intergroup differences were determined, and the effects of anxiety, aggressiveness, and stimulus ambiguity were analyzed.
