- ABSTRACT
- Studied cognitive processes involved in aesthetic judgments via text analysis. Human subjects: 56 normal male and female West German adolescents and adults (university students). The Ss were asked to select 1 of 8 paintings and to describe their chosen painting in an essay. Before and after writing the essay, the Ss provided aesthetic ratings of their respective paintings. The essays were analyzed via the Dogmatismustextauswertung (DOTA)-Verfahren ("Dogmatism Text Evaluation") procedure developed by S. Ertel (1972, 1981) to assess the degree of "openness" (complexity) or "closedness" of cognitive organization. DOTA results with essays on pictures rated as "beautiful" and pictures rated as "ugly" were compared.
